South Africa is on the most Southern tip of Africa being 2500 km from Namibia to the Indian Ocean. South Africa shares borders with Namibia and Botswana, touches Zimbabwe, and also border with Mozambique in the east, and lastly curves in around Swaziland. The size of South Africa is not large but is about the same size as Niger, and Mali. Being 1.2 million square kilometers.  That would be about one eight of United States or three times the size of Germany.
South Africa is mostly surrounded by two oceans. Because of that, the climate is really effect . The Oceans make it difficult to have many safe harbors which make  Saldanha Bay north of Cape Town the best and only option for safe harbor. There are also other harbors but not as big as the Saldanha Bay. Other harbors include Richards Bay and Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, East London and Port Elizabeth and Mossel Bay and Cape Town. The newest port, the Port of Ngqura, is off the coast from Port Elizabeth and has the deepest container terminal in sub-Saharan Africa. Two main rivers in South Africa are Limpopo and the Orange River. Because the country is mostly dry, dams are important and the largest one is on the Orange River called Gariep.
While the United States have States, South Africa has Provinces. A total of nine;  The Eastern Cape, The Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, The Northern Cape, North West,  and The Western Cape . Prior to 1994, there were only four provinces; Transvaal, Cape, Orange Free Sate and Natal.
Unlike most countries, South Africa has three capitals. They are divided by branches, Judicial, Legislative and administrative. One Capital is Cape Town, most known. This is the Legislative Capital. The Judicial Capital is in Bloemfontein. And the third  capital is the administrative being in Pretoria. Even though these cities are the capitals, Johannesburg is the largest and most important city because it is what some refer to as “The Economic Heartland”.
When it comes to topography, the eastern part of South Africa is full of live because of its lushesness and gets plenty of rain, while the Southern part is not as lush but still as green especially in the winter. South-west gets wet winters and hot and dry summers. This place is also known for its winds.
