Over 100,000 years ago, the first settlers occupied South Africa. They were known as San and Khoekhoe. Ever since then, humans have been living there, shaping their country on the Southern tip on Africa. This group of people were hunter-gatherers so you can imagine the disadvantage when the early Europeans came along.  When the Europeans came to the Cape, the Khoekhoe were the ones who greeted them-as well as the deadly disease the Europeans brought along with them. The Khoekhoe were unable to survive the smallpox disease so eventually they disappeared.
Fast forward a few hundred years and we meet Jan can Reibeeck in 1652. He was sent by the Dutch East India Company with 90 other men. This group was sent to build a fort and plant a vegetable garden for the ships heading on the Eastern trade route. The San and who was left of the Khoekhoe didn’t like their presence or being the white people’s slaves and in 1657 things started looking bad. Land was being given to the white people and in 1662 one could see a colony forming of 250 people. The original people of South Africa started being squeezed out when in the 1700’s the Dutch started immigrating into South Africa.
Later on in the 18th century, more of the Dutch, German, French started coming to South Africa and going north from there. The British managed to take the Cape in 1795, but not for long, they returned it back to the Dutch in 1802 and back to the British in 1806. The years between 1806 and 1820 were difficult for both the Xhosa and the settlers. There was defiance, starvation and more immigrants. One immigrant happened to be a philanthropist missionary John Philip. Many many conflicts arose during those years  creating the Orange Free State and South Africa Republic.
In 1853 diamonds were discovered and gold in 1883. This was not good news for the South Africans, because that meant more settlers and more labor and slavery. The British and Dutch tried putting the South Africans into their place but couldn’t after humiliating defeats and in 1902 the Britsih finally won the war ended in Boer bringing forth the Peace of Vereeniging. The blacks were put under unbearable conditions so they went to the South African Native Convention in 1909 to plead their case.
After 300 years of colonization, South Africa became a democracy but not without bloodshed and giving up land. They are currently bordering Botswana, Zimbabwe Namibia, and Mozambique. The population of South Africans is slowly rising with Twenty nine percent  of the population being under 15 years and about  5% is 60 years or older. After going through so much South Africa has become diverse with eleven national languages.  Economically, South Africa is doing better than before and have started going into manufacturing instead of just mining and agriculture.
